Nobody in their wildest dreams could have imagined the excitement, the fun and the thrill this competition provided. ICC World Twenty20 2007 revitalized cricket in the hearts and minds of many cricket fans including yours truly. This has been a tournament to cherish and enjoy in its entirety. In the end, its the young Indian cricket team lead by Mahendra Singh Dhoni that triumphed all other legendary cricketing teams. Its been a long wait of almost 24 years since India last won such a major cricketing tournament.
After the debacle of ICC Cricket World Cup 2007, this was precisely the thing cricketing fans were looking for. It was non-stop entertainment and the best thing was that each match lasted only 3.5 hours and most of them provided nail biting finishes. India’s first match against Scotland was washed off but the second match against Pakistan finished with a scoreline of 3-0 in India’s favor. Amusing it is but that’s what ‘Bowl-Out‘ in Twenty20 cricket is all about. In the first round, Zimbabwe defeating Australia and Bangladesh defeating West Indies were the only upsets.
In the Super Eight stage, teams were divided into two groups of 4 each. India lost their first match against New Zealand and were facing a gigantic task ahead. Nobody expected anything from them and that’s whn things were turned around on it head. Indians started playing exceptional cricket without any fear of opposition punctuated by some individual brilliance. Yuvraj Singh’s 6-sixes in an over against England has to be the highlight of the tournament. India surpassed all expectations and beat both England and South Africa to reach the next round.
The four semi-finalists were New Zealand, Pakistan, India and Australia with the sub-continental neighbours on a role. Pakistan easily and expectedly defeated New Zealand but the real scorcher of a semi-final was played between India and Australia. Australia were clear favorites but India, owing to another exceptional display, were able to beat the Aussies against all odds. Things started to look rosy for the Indians as if they were destined to win the cup. Now all eyes were set on a India versus Pakistan final, a dream match to say the least.
The final was a fiercely fought battle between two sub continent giants and biggest rivals in the history of the game. Not an inch was spared and the battle was fought till the last over. At one moment, it looked as if India will run away with the game but then Misbah Ul-Haq provided a scintillating knock and brought Pakistan to within striking distance. Then came the master stroke from the Indian captain and it was all over within 3 balls of the final over. India were crowned the first ICC World Twenty20 Champions. A moment to treasure for every sports loving Indian. Chak De India!
