The Grand Prix of Canada could easily be described as the best race so far this season. Agreed, it was chaotic but it provided all of us with much needed fun. An incident packed race finally saw the emergence of a new winner in Formula 1, Lewis Hamilton. Amongst all the drama that was going on, he drove a flawless race! There was not a single moment of boredom during the one and half hours which was extended a bit by the inclusion of as many as four safety car periods. In between all the chaos, BMW’s Robert Kubica survived a near fatal crash, the most horrific in recent memory.
Fernando Alonso made the most number of mistakes during the entire race and ended up sweeping the track side grass on three to four occasions. His miserable weekend was capped by Takuma Sato’s superb overtaking maneuver on him just minutes before the end of the race. To be fair to him, a 10 second stop-go penalty for making a pit stop while the safety car was coming out on track, almost ended his race. Nico Rosberg suffered a similar fate. If all that wasn’t enough, this race even saw two drivers, Felipe Massa of Ferrari and Giancarlo Fisichella of Renault being black-flagged for ignoring the red light while coming out of the pits.
Kimi Raikkonen disappointed again. He failed to impress through out the race and somehow limped to a 5th place finish. He lost ground during the start, hit his team-mate from behind and damaged his car during the Kubica incident. The end result is that we got two unlikely podium visitors, Nick Heidfeld finishing 2nd and Alexander Wurz finishing 3rd. Heikki Kovalainen managed a brilliant 4th place for Renault! This unusual result means McLaren with 88 points leads the championship from Ferrari by 28 points. Hamilton at 48 points leads Alonso by 8 points, Massa by 15 points and Kimi by 21 points in the Driver’s battle.
