F1 Chinese GP 2007

When we reached the Chinese Grand Prix 2007, the 16th race of a 17-race calendar, only three drivers were fighting for the championship. Fernando Alonso was struggling with his team-mate and most importantly, his team. Kimi Raikkonen lead all practice sessions and was clearly looking the fastest driver of the three. During the Qualifying, however, it was Lewis Hamilton who took the pole much to McLaren’s delight. Kimi had to settle for P2 on the grid with Massa on P3 and Alonso on P4.

On race day, the conditions were much like Japan but this time, the visibility was better and the shower was light. All of the front runners made decent starts and immediately Lewis started to pull away from Kimi. Felipe Massa and Alonso were having a fight of their own. Lewis’s pace somewhat confirmed my belief that he was light on fuel. The changing conditions made life difficult for drivers. As the track started to dry up, the drivers were made to fight it out with their wet weather tires.

Kimi made his pit stop 4 laps later than Lewis by which time he was able to reduce a 7-second gap to about 3 seconds and was closing in faster. Lewis was struggling with his tires and within no time, Kimi was right on his tail. Lewis tried his best to prevent the Finn from overtaking him but it was inevitable. Lewis decided to pit but it was a lap too late. He was stranded at the gravel trap beside the pit lane entry, much to the disappointment of all British fans.

As conditions improved, everyone changed to dry tires and from there on it was an easy race for Kimi and Ferrari. Fernando tried to close down the gap but everything was under the control of the ‘Ice Man‘. He secured his 5th win of the season and strengthened his chances at this year’s Drivers Championship. The last race promises to be a thriller as all three title protagonists are separated by only 7 points. Hamilton is still the favorite but Alonso and Kimi will have nothing to lose.
